Before students translate whole shapes, build their confidence in using vectors with this worksheet, where learners will begin with translating only a point.
Here, students are given a set of x and y axes in four quadrants with all the letters of the alphabet scattered around on various coordinates.
In section A, learners will describe in words and in vector form the translation from one letter to another, as well as using the translation to decide which letters it describes the translation of.
Then in section B, students are given a starting point and a series of vectors which they will use to travel from letter to letter to spell out a hidden message.
Finally, in section C, pupils must translate a message into vector ‘code’. Again, from a starting point and traveling from letter to letter.
